Sanje Waterfalls Complete Guide

The Sanje Waterfalls trail is Udzungwa’s signature experience. This 170-metre cascade, plunging through ancient rainforest, draws visitors from around the world.

The Trail

The hike starts at the park gate in Mang’ula and climbs steadily through montane rainforest for approximately 2 hours. The trail is well-maintained but involves steep sections.

Along the way, your guide will point out medicinal plants, bird calls, and troops of red colobus monkeys in the canopy overhead.

“The first glimpse of the falls through the trees is a moment you’ll never forget.”

What to Expect

The main viewpoint offers a spectacular panorama. A steeper path descends to the plunge pool at the base where you can swim in crystal-clear water.

The round trip takes 4–5 hours. Start early (7am) to avoid afternoon clouds.

What to Bring

Sturdy hiking boots, at least 1.5 litres of water, rain jacket, swimwear, and binoculars.
