Endemic Primates of Udzungwa

Udzungwa is one of Africa’s most important primate habitats. Six primate species live here, two found absolutely nowhere else: the Udzungwa red colobus and the Sanje mangabey.

Udzungwa Red Colobus

Discovered in 1979, this striking monkey has a reddish cap and white belly. About 3,000 individuals live in the park. They’re relatively habituated and can be observed feeding in the canopy at close range.

“Watching a family group leap through the canopy — it’s impossible not to feel the weight of their vulnerability.”

Sanje Mangabey

One of Africa’s rarest monkeys. Fewer than 1,500 individuals remain. They spend much of their time on the forest floor, making them harder to spot.

How to See Them

Book a dedicated primate trekking excursion. The dry season (June–October) offers best conditions. Start early and be prepared for off-trail walking.
